A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

The longest procedural text in the book at sixty-eight units, and the one everything else in this section leads to. A กรรมวาจา is a formal act of the Sangha, and this is the act by which a person becomes a monk.

Its length comes almost entirely from repetition. The same substance is stated four times over: once as a motion, and then three times as an announcement.

Meaning and purpose

The motion states the case — this is the motion for the ordination of these candidates under this preceptor — and closes by naming itself: เอสา ญัตติ, this is the motion. The assembly now knows exactly what it is being asked.

Then the same thing three more times, each ending with the same invitation to object: whoever of the venerable ones it is acceptable to, let him be silent; whoever it is not acceptable to, let him speak. Three chances are given, not one.

The last lines record what happened: it is acceptable to the Sangha, therefore it is silent — เอวะเมตัง ธาระยามิ, thus do I hold it. A life is changed by nobody having spoken, four times asked, and by one monk stating for the record what that silence meant.
