The offering made on Āsāḷha Pūjā, the day of the first teaching, and the shortest of the four festival offerings.
- When chanted
- Chanted on Āsāḷha Pūjā while flowers, incense and candles are offered.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
The four festival offerings are built to one plan. Each opens with the same clauses — the Blessed One gone to for refuge, our teacher, in whose Dhamma we delight — then recounts what the day commemorates, and closes by asking that the offerings taken up be accepted, for our welfare and happiness for a long time to come.
Āsāḷha is the last of the four and its offering is much the shortest — twenty-five units against the sixty of Visākha. What it recounts is not a life but a decision: that the Blessed One, out of compassion for beings, being merciful, a seeker of their welfare and taking up sympathy, taught.
Meaning and purpose
Four words are used where one would do — compassion, mercy, seeking their welfare, taking up sympathy — and the repetition is the argument. The day marks a choice to speak rather than the content of what was spoken, and the chant spends its length on the motive.
That is why it can afford to be short. The other three days commemorate events that need recounting: a birth and a death, a cremation, a gathering of twelve hundred and fifty. This one commemorates a teacher deciding that it was worth trying, which takes one sentence.
The close is identical to the others, and by the fourth festival the reader will know it by heart: known now only by your qualities, discerned as an object belonging to the past, accept these offerings taken up by us, for our welfare and happiness for a long time to come.

We now, at this present time, having reached this Āsāḷha full-moon day — which is held to be the time when that Blessed One set rolling the Wheel of the Dhamma, and the time when the Saṅgha of noble disciples arose, and the time when the Triple Jewel was made complete —
