The offering made on Aṭṭhamī Pūjā, the eighth day after Visākha, which commemorates the cremation of the Buddha's body.
- When chanted
- Chanted on Aṭṭhamī Pūjā while flowers, incense and candles are offered.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
The four festival offerings are built to one plan. Each opens with the same clauses — the Blessed One gone to for refuge, our teacher, in whose Dhamma we delight — then recounts what the day commemorates, and closes by asking that the offerings taken up be accepted, for our welfare and happiness for a long time to come.
Aṭṭhamī is the second of the four and much the least observed. Its own verses say what it marks: the eighth day from the Visākha full moon, when the body was burnt. It is the only one of the four days that commemorates something that happened to the Buddha after his death rather than during his life.
Meaning and purpose
The offering runs parallel to the Visākha one almost line for line, which is the point of reading them together. What changes is the event recounted in the middle, and everything around it stays put.
The effect of that sameness is worth noticing on a day like this one. The same refuge, the same list of qualities, the same concession that he is known now only as an object belonging to the past, and the same request — said over a day whose subject is a funeral pyre.
The chant does not raise its voice for the occasion. It ends as the others do, asking that the offerings taken up be accepted for our welfare and happiness for a long time to come, which on this particular day reads less like a petition than a statement about what is left.
