The offering made on Visākha Pūjā, the day that commemorates the Buddha's birth, awakening and final passing together.
- When chanted
- Chanted on Visākha Pūjā while flowers, incense and candles are offered, usually before the circumambulation.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
The four festival offerings are built to one plan. Each opens with the same clauses — the Blessed One gone to for refuge, our teacher, in whose Dhamma we delight — then recounts what the day commemorates, and closes by asking that the offerings taken up be accepted, for our welfare and happiness for a long time to come.
Visākha is the first and largest of the four. What it commemorates is a coincidence of dates rather than one event: the tradition holds that the Buddha was born, reached awakening, and passed to final nibbāna on the same full moon, and the chant treats all three together.
Meaning and purpose
The recital of the life follows the invitation of the page before, but at greater length and in shorter units — the book sets much of it a few words to a line, which is how it is chanted: slowly, with the assembly holding flowers.
What the offering asks for is stated with the same candour found throughout this book. The Blessed One is long since gone; he is known now only by his qualities and discerned only as an object belonging to the past. That concession is made explicitly, in the sentence immediately before the request.
And then the request anyway: that these offerings, taken up by us, be accepted, for our welfare and happiness for a long time to come. Nothing is claimed about where the flowers go. What the chant establishes is that they were offered knowingly, by people who had just said aloud that the one they are offered to is not there.
