The formula by which shared ownership of a robe is released, in two versions according to who is senior.
- When chanted
- Spoken by the monk who holds a share in a robe, releasing his claim so the other may use it freely.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
This undoes the assignment made on the same page. Shared ownership is a real claim, so it has to be released by the person who holds it, in words.
The book prints the formula twice, and the difference between the two is purely grammatical: one set of verb endings for a speaker senior to the other monk, another for a speaker junior to him.
Meaning and purpose
The sentence itself is generous to the point of bluntness: this robe is my property; use it, or give it away, or do with it as you see fit. The claim is not merely waived. It is asserted and then handed over entirely.
That order matters. Saying my property first is what makes the release meaningful — a claim can only be given up by somebody who has one.
The two versions are the more revealing detail. The tradition takes enough care over seniority that the same act, done by a junior monk to a senior, requires a different set of endings; and it prints both so that neither party has to work it out in the moment.
