โลกะธัมมะสุตตัง Lokadhammasuttaṃ The Discourse on the Eight Worldly Conditions Chanted after its introductory verses, among the discourses in the collection. pages 187–190 24 verses

The eight worldly conditions — gain and loss, fame and obscurity, blame and praise, pleasure and pain — and what separates the noble disciple from the ordinary person.

When chanted
Chanted after its introductory verses, among the discourses in the collection.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

The eight are named in the second unit and then never left. What the discourse actually examines is not the eight but the difference between two people to whom the same eight happen.

It is one of the most quoted discourses in lay teaching, because the eight are the whole of what most people worry about.

Meaning and purpose

The eight come in four pairs and each pair is an opposite: gain and loss, fame and obscurity, blame and praise, pleasure and pain. Nobody is exempt from any of them.

The question the discourse turns on is put directly: what then is the distinction, what the difference, what the distinguishing mark between the learned noble disciple and the unlearned ordinary person? Both have all eight. Something else must separate them.

The answer is reflection, and it is almost disappointingly small. The ordinary person, when gain arises, does not reflect that this gain is impermanent and bound to change; the noble disciple does. Nothing is prevented and nothing is escaped. What differs is whether the eight are recognised for what they are while they are happening.

Thus have I heard. At one time the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. There the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus: 'Bhikkhus.' 'Venerable sir,' those bhikkhus replied to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said this: 'Bhikkhus, these eight worldly conditions turn about the world, and the world turns about these eight worldly conditions.

Which eight? Gain and loss, fame and obscurity, blame and praise, pleasure and pain. These, bhikkhus, are the eight worldly conditions that turn about the world, and the world turns about these eight worldly conditions.

'Venerable sir, for us these things have the Blessed One as their root, the Blessed One as their guide, the Blessed One as their resort. It would be good if the meaning of this saying might occur to the Blessed One himself; hearing it from him, the bhikkhus will bear it in mind.' 'Then listen, bhikkhus, attend closely, I shall speak.' 'Even so, venerable sir,' those bhikkhus replied to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said this:
