มัคคะวิภังคะสุตตัง Maggavibhaṅgasuttaṃ The Discourse on the Analysis of the Path Chanted after its prefatory verse, among the discourses in the collection. pages 108–110 10 verses

The noble eightfold path defined factor by factor, each introduced by the same question and answered in the same form.

When chanted
Chanted after its prefatory verse, among the discourses in the collection.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

The book prints its own reference. The discourse does exactly what its name says — it takes the eight factors of the path and defines each one, with no narrative and no simile.

Each definition opens with the same question, กะตะมงจะ — and what, monks, is — and closes by saying, this is called such-and-such. The form is the same for all eight.

Meaning and purpose

The definitions are shorter and plainer than most people expect. Right view is knowledge of suffering, of its origin, of its cessation and of the way leading to its cessation. Right intention is the intention of renunciation, of non-ill-will, of harmlessness.

Where a factor concerns conduct it is defined entirely by abstentions: right speech is abstaining from false speech, from malicious speech, from harsh speech, from idle chatter. Nothing is said about what to say instead.

The last three are the ones that describe activity rather than restraint — right effort as generating desire, endeavouring, arousing energy, exerting the mind and striving; right mindfulness as dwelling contemplating the body in the body, ardent and clearly comprehending. Chanted straight through, the discourse gives a listener the whole path in eight sentences, which is why it is kept in a book meant to be used rather than studied.

Thus have I heard. At one time the Blessed One was staying near Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. There the Blessed One addressed the monks: 'Monks.' 'Venerable sir,' those monks replied. The Blessed One said this: 'Monks, I shall teach you the noble eightfold path and analyse it. Listen to it, attend closely, I shall speak.' 'Yes, venerable sir,' those monks replied. The Blessed One said this: 'And what, monks, is the noble eightfold path? It is this: right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration.'

And what, monks, is right concentration? Here a monk, secluded from sense pleasures and unwholesome states, enters and dwells in the first jhāna, with thinking and examining, and rapture and pleasure born of seclusion. With the stilling of thinking and examining he enters the second, with inner clarity and unification of mind. With the fading of rapture he dwells equanimous, mindful and clearly comprehending, experiencing pleasure with the body — that of which the noble ones say 'equanimous and mindful, he dwells pleasantly' — and enters the third. With the abandoning of pleasure and pain, and the earlier passing away of joy and grief, he enters the fourth jhāna, which is neither painful nor pleasant, with purity of mindfulness through equanimity. This, monks, is called right concentration.
