มะหาจุนทะโพชฌังคะสุตตัง Mahācundabojjhaṅgasuttaṃ The Discourse on the Factors of Awakening, to Mahācunda Chanted at the bedside of the sick, closing the set of three. pages 36–37 21 verses

The third of the set, and the one that turns around: here the Buddha is the one who is ill, and Mahācunda recites the factors to him.

When chanted
Chanted at the bedside of the sick, closing the set of three.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

The third and last of the set, shorter than the two before it, and different in a way that is easy to read past: the sick person here is the Buddha himself. The setting is the same Bamboo Grove at Rājagaha.

Alone of the three, this one carries a printed reference in the book, which is kept verbatim in source_printed.

Meaning and purpose

The reversal changes how the whole set reads. In the first two the Buddha comes to a sick disciple. Here Mahācunda comes to the sick Buddha, and the Buddha says only ปะฏิภันตุ ตัง จุนทะ โพชฌังคาติ — let the factors of awakening come to mind for you, Cunda. He asks to be recited to.

Cunda gives the same list back, and the attribution runs the other way throughout: rightly declared by the Blessed One, developed and made much of. Then the Buddha answers with the same formula his disciples used to him in the first two — assuredly, Cunda, they are factors of awakening.

The close is briefer and stranger than the others: this the venerable Mahācunda said; the Teacher approved; and the Blessed One rose up from that illness. Chanting the three together is what makes the point available. The recitation is not something the well do for the sick, or the senior for the junior. Even the one who taught the list is, on the third telling, the one being recited to.
