มะหากัสสะปะโพชฌังคะสุตตัง Mahākassapabojjhaṅgasuttaṃ The Discourse on the Factors of Awakening, to Mahākassapa Chanted at the bedside of the sick, the first of three such discourses the book prints together. pages 33–34 27 verses

The Buddha visits the gravely ill Mahākassapa, recites the seven factors of awakening, and Mahākassapa rises from the illness.

When chanted
Chanted at the bedside of the sick, the first of three such discourses the book prints together.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

โพชฌังคะ are the factors of awakening, seven of them: mindfulness, investigation of states, energy, rapture, tranquillity, concentration and equanimity. This chant names all seven in full, each in its own clause, with nothing abbreviated.

It is the first of three parallel discourses printed one after another in the book — to Mahākassapa, to Mahāmoggallāna and to Mahācunda. All three share the setting at Rājagaha in the Bamboo Grove and very nearly the same words, and they are chanted as a set.

Meaning and purpose

The exchange at the opening repays reading slowly. The Buddha asks whether the pain is subsiding rather than increasing. Kassapa answers that it is not: the feelings are severe and increasing, and their increase is what is apparent. Nothing is softened on either side, and no comfort is offered in reply to it.

What is offered instead is the list. The Buddha does not say the factors will cure anything — he says they lead to direct knowledge, to full awakening, to Nibbāna. Kassapa's reply is not a request but a confirmation: assuredly, Blessed One, they are factors of awakening. He is agreeing with something he already knows.

Then the last line, reported flatly: he rose up from that illness, and in that way the illness was abandoned. The recovery is recorded, not promised, and the whole use of the chant at sickbeds rests on that distinction. What is recited to someone ill is a description of what leads to awakening. That a recovery followed is left standing as a thing that happened.

At one time the Blessed One was dwelling at Rājagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrels' feeding place.

Now at that time the venerable Mahākassapa was dwelling in the Pipphali Cave, afflicted, suffering, gravely ill.
