มะหาโมคคัลลานะโพชฌังคะสุตตัง Mahāmoggallānabojjhaṅgasuttaṃ The Discourse on the Factors of Awakening, to Mahāmoggallāna Chanted at the bedside of the sick, the second of the three such discourses the book prints together. pages 34–36 27 verses

The same visit and the same seven factors, this time to Mahāmoggallāna on the Vulture's Peak, who likewise rises from his illness.

When chanted
Chanted at the bedside of the sick, the second of the three such discourses the book prints together.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

The second of the set, and structurally identical to the first. What differs is the patient and the place: Mahāmoggallāna, on the Vulture's Peak rather than in the Pipphali Cave.

The book prints all three discourses in full rather than abbreviating the repeated passages, and this edition follows the page. Somebody chanting the set therefore says the seven factors through three times in one sitting.

Meaning and purpose

Because so much repeats, what stands out is what repeats. The seven factors are named again one by one, each in the same clause, rightly declared by the Blessed One, developed and made much of, leading to direct knowledge, to full awakening, to Nibbāna. Nothing is compressed on the second telling.

The exchange is the same too: the question about whether the pain is receding, the plain answer that it is not, and then the list. In neither discourse does the Buddha respond to the pain itself. He responds by naming what he has taught.

The reason to chant the set rather than one of them is in that sameness. Two of the most senior disciples in the tradition, in different places and separately, are given exactly the same thing, in the same words, and both recover. Nothing is tailored to the person, and the consistency is the point being made.

Then the Blessed One, rising from seclusion towards evening, went to where the venerable Mahāmoggallāna was;
