มะหาสะมะยะสุตตัง Mahāsamayasuttaṃ The Discourse on the Great Gathering Chanted where the largest possible assembly is invoked; the longest discourse in the Thai-script collection. pages 175–182 167 verses

The great gathering: deities from ten world-systems assembling to see the Buddha and five hundred arahants, named host by host.

When chanted
Chanted where the largest possible assembly is invoked; the longest discourse in the Thai-script collection.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

The book prints its own reference. At a hundred and sixty-seven units this is the longest chant in the Thai-script half, and the book prints it again in roman script in the appendix.

It is a catalogue: deva after deva, host after host, named and placed. Read as a list it is impossible; chanted, the length is the content.

Meaning and purpose

The setting is given in a few lines and then the human scale is abandoned. The Blessed One among the Sakyans with five hundred bhikkhus, all arahants — and deities gathering from ten world-systems to see them.

What follows is the naming. An hour of unfamiliar names delivered without pause builds a sense of scale that no summary can, and the room fills up as the chant goes on. That is the whole effect and it cannot be had by reading.

The last verses turn to what Māra's army found when it came: from those free of lust it withdrew, and not one hair was stirred. All of them have won the battle, gone beyond fear, and are glorious. The enormous assembly turns out to have been gathered to witness people who could not be frightened.

Thus have I heard. At one time the Blessed One was dwelling among the Sakyans at Kapilavatthu, in the Great Wood, with a great Sangha of bhikkhus, five hundred of them, all arahants; and deities from ten world-systems had for the most part gathered to see the Blessed One and the Sangha of bhikkhus. Then it occurred to four deities of the Pure Abodes: the Blessed One is dwelling among the Sakyans at Kapilavatthu, and deities have gathered to see him; let us go to him, and each speak a verse in his presence.

Then those deities, as swiftly as a strong man might extend his flexed arm or flex his extended arm, vanished from among the deities of the Pure Abodes and appeared before the Blessed One. They paid homage to him and stood to one side; and standing there, one deity spoke this verse in his presence:

Then the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus: bhikkhus, deities from ten world-systems have for the most part gathered to see the Tathagata and the Sangha of bhikkhus. Just so did deities gather in this same number for those Blessed Ones who in time past were arahants, perfectly awakened — as they have for me now; and just so will they gather for those who in time to come will be arahants, perfectly awakened — as they have for me now. I shall tell you the names of the hosts of devas, I shall proclaim them, I shall teach them. Listen, attend closely, I shall speak. Even so, venerable sir, those bhikkhus replied to the Blessed One; and the Blessed One said this:
