The great gathering of devas from ten world-systems who came to see the Buddha and the five hundred arahants at Kapilavatthu.
- When chanted
- Chanted on occasions where the largest possible assembly is being invoked; printed here in the book's roman-script appendix.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
This is one of two chants in this book printed in ROMAN Pali rather than Thai script. It sits in the appendix at the back, where the layers a reader meets are the romanised Pali and the English — the Thai script and ThaiBridge Spelling columns are empty because the page has none.
At a hundred and ninety-two verses it is the longest chant in the book. The Mahāsamaya is a catalogue: deva after deva, host after host, named and placed.
Meaning and purpose
The setting is given in four lines and then never returns to the human scale. The Blessed One among the Sakyans at Kapilavatthu in the Great Wood, with five hundred bhikkhus, all of them arahants — and from ten world-systems the deities had for the most part gathered to see them.
What follows is the naming, and the naming is the point. Reading it as a list is possible but misses what chanting it does: an hour of unfamiliar names, delivered without pause, builds a sense of scale that no summary can. The room fills up as the chant goes on.
The last verses turn to what Māra's army found when it came. From those free of lust it withdrew; not one hair of theirs was stirred. All of them victors in the battle, gone beyond fear, of renown, they rejoice together with the beings. The enormous assembly turns out to have been gathered to witness people who could not be frightened.
The chant

Thus have I heard:
Ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā
At one time the Blessed One
sakkesu viharati kapilavatthusmiṃ mahāvane
was dwelling among the Sakyans, at Kapilavatthu in the Great Wood,
mahatā bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṃ pañcamattehi bhikkhusatehi sabbeheva arahantehi.
together with a great community of bhikkhus, five hundred bhikkhus, all of them arahants.
Dasahi ca lokadhātūhi devatā yebhuyyena sannipatitā honti bhagavantaṃ dassanāya bhikkhusaṅghañca.
And from ten world-systems the deities had for the most part gathered to see the Blessed One and the community of bhikkhus.
Atha kho catunnaṃ suddhāvāsakāyikānaṃ devānaṃ etadahosi:
Then it occurred to four deities of the Pure Abodes:
“Ayaṃ kho bhagavā sakkesu viharati kapilavatthusmiṃ mahāvane
“This Blessed One is dwelling among the Sakyans, at Kapilavatthu in the Great Wood,
mahatā bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṃ pañcamattehi bhikkhusatehi sabbeheva arahantehi
together with a great community of bhikkhus, five hundred bhikkhus, all of them arahants,
dasahi ca lokadhātūhi devatā yebhuyyena sannipatitā honti bhagavantaṃ dassanāya bhikkhusaṅghañca.
and from ten world-systems the deities have for the most part gathered to see the Blessed One and the community of bhikkhus.
Yannūna mayampi yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkameyyāma.
What if we too were to approach the Blessed One,
Upasaṅkamitvā bhagavato santike paccekagāthā bhāseyyāmā”ti.
and having approached, each speak a verse in his presence?”
Atha kho tā devatā
Then those deities —
seyyathāpi nāma balavā puriso samiñjitaṃ vā bāhaṃ pasāreyya,
just as a strong man might extend his bent arm,
pasāritaṃ vā bāhaṃ samiñjeyya,
or bend his extended arm —
evameva suddhāvāsesu devesu antarahitā bhagavato purato pāturahaṃsu.
just so vanished from among the deities of the Pure Abodes and appeared before the Blessed One.
Atha kho tā devatā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ aṭṭhaṃsu.
Then those deities paid homage to the Blessed One and stood to one side.
Ekamantaṃ ṭhitā kho ekā devatā bhagavato santike imaṃ gāthaṃ abhāsi:
Standing to one side, one deity spoke this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:
“Mahā samayo pavanasmiṃ. Devakāyā samāgatā:
“A great assembly in the woodland: the hosts of devas have come together;
‘Āgatamha imaṃ dhammasamayaṃ dakkhitāye v’aparājitasaṅghan’ti”.
‘we have come to this assembly of the Dhamma, to see the invincible Saṅgha’.”
Atha kho aparā devatā bhagavato santike imaṃ gāthaṃ abhāsi:
Then another deity spoke this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:
“Tatra bhikkhavo samādahaṃsu cittamattano ujuka-makaṃsu.
“There the bhikkhus are composed; they have made their own minds straight.
Sārathīva nettāni gahetvā indriyāni rakkhanti paṇḍitā”ti.
Like a charioteer holding the reins, the wise ones guard their faculties.”
Atha kho aparā devatā bhagavato santike imaṃ gāthaṃ abhāsi:
Then another deity spoke this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:
“Chetvā khīlaṃ chetvā palighaṃ indakhīlaṃ ohacca-manejā,
“Having cut through the stake, having cut through the bar, having uprooted the pillar, unstirred,
Te caranti suddhā vimalā cakkhumatā sudantā susu nāgā”ti.
they walk pure and stainless, young nāgas well tamed by the One with vision.”
Atha kho aparā devatā bhagavato santike imaṃ gāthaṃ abhāsi:
Then another deity spoke this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:
“Ye keci buddhaṃ saraṇaṃ gatāse na te gamissanti apāyabhūmiṃ.
“Whoever have gone to the Buddha for refuge will not go to the plane of misery.
Pahāya mānusaṃ dehaṃ devakāyaṃ paripūressantī”ti.
Having left the human body behind, they will fill out the ranks of the devas.”
Atha kho bhagavā bhikkhu āmantesi,
Then the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus:
“yebhuyyena bhikkhave dasasu lokadhātūsu devatā sannipatitā tathāgataṃ dassanāya bhikkhusaṅghañca.
“Bhikkhus, deities from ten world-systems have for the most part gathered to see the Tathāgata and the community of bhikkhus.
Ye pi te bhikkhave ahesuṃ atīta-maddhānaṃ arahanto sammāsambuddhā, tesampi bhagavantānaṃ etaparamā yeva devatā sannipatitā ahesuṃ,
Bhikkhus, those who in times past were arahants, fully enlightened Buddhas — for those Blessed Ones too the deities gathered in just such numbers at most,
seyyathāpi mayhaṃ etarahi.
just as they do for me now.
Ye pi te bhikkhave bhavissanti anāgata-maddhānaṃ arahanto sammāsambuddhā,
And bhikkhus, those who in times to come will be arahants, fully enlightened Buddhas —
tesampi bhagavantānaṃ etaparamā yeva devatā sannipatitā bhavissanti,
for those Blessed Ones too the deities will gather in just such numbers at most,
seyyathāpi mayhaṃ etarahi.
just as they do for me now.
Ācikkhissāmi bhikkhave devakāyānaṃ nāmāni.
I shall announce, bhikkhus, the names of the hosts of devas.
Kittayissāmi bhikkhave devakāyānaṃ nāmāni.
I shall proclaim, bhikkhus, the names of the hosts of devas.
Desissāmi bhikkhave devakāyānaṃ nāmāni.
I shall teach, bhikkhus, the names of the hosts of devas.
Taṃ suṇātha. Sādhukaṃ manasikarotha. Bhāsissāmī”ti.
Listen to it. Attend closely. I shall speak.”
“Evam bhante”ti kho te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṃ.
“Yes, venerable sir,” those bhikkhus replied to the Blessed One.
Bhagavā etadavoca:
The Blessed One said this:
“Silokamanukassāmi yattha bhummā tadassitā,
“I shall recite a verse in praise, telling where the earth-devas dwell:
Ye sitā girigabbharaṃ pahitattā samāhitā.
those who cling to the mountain cleft, resolute and composed.
Puthū sīhā’va sallīnā lomahaṃsābhisambhuno,
Many, withdrawn like lions, whose hair stands on end in awe,
Odātamanasā suddhā vippasanna-manāvilā”.
bright of mind, pure, serene and untroubled.”
Bhiyyo pañcasate ñatvā vane kāpilavatthave,
Knowing that more than five hundred were in the Kapilavatthu wood,
Tato āmantayi satthā sāvake sāsane rate:
the Teacher then addressed the disciples who delight in the teaching:
“Devakāyā abhikkantā. Te vijānātha bhikkhavo”.
“The hosts of devas have come. Know them, bhikkhus.”
Te ca ātappa-makaruṃ sutvā buddhassa sāsanaṃ.
And they made an ardent effort, having heard the Buddha's instruction.
Tesaṃ pāturahu ñāṇaṃ amanussāna dassanaṃ.
Knowledge appeared to them, the seeing of non-human beings.
Appeke sata-maddakkhuṃ, sahassaṃ atha sattariṃ.
Some saw a hundred, some a thousand, and some seventy thousand.
Sataṃ eke sahassānaṃ amanussāna-maddasuṃ,
Some saw a hundred thousand non-human beings,
Appeke ’nanta-maddakkhuṃ: disā sabbā phuṭā ahuṃ.
and some saw them without end: every direction was filled.

Tadā so paccudāvatti, saṅkuddho asayaṃvase.
Then he turned back, enraged and not his own master.
