The Great Discourse on the Foundations of Mindfulness in full: the one-way path set out at length, ending in a promise about seven days.
- When chanted
- Chanted where the full text is wanted; the longest single discourse in the book.
Historical background
The book gives this printing no English title of its own, so the name used in the app is supplied. The book prints its own reference.
At two hundred and nine units it runs to thirty-one printed pages, and it is the discourse the whole practice tradition of this book rests on.
Meaning and purpose
It opens with the claim and the list of purposes: this is the one-way path for the purification of beings, for the surmounting of sorrow and lamentation, for the ending of pain and grief, for attaining the method, for realising Nibbāna.
Then the four foundations are worked through at length, and the refrain returns after every section — he dwells contemplating the nature of arising, or of passing away, or of both. The same observation is applied to breath, to postures, to the parts of the body, to feelings, to states of mind, and to the hindrances and the factors of awakening in turn.
The closing is the most concrete promise in the book, and it is graded. Whoever develops these four in this way for seven years may expect one of two fruits; then seven months; and at last seven days. A discourse of this length ends by saying that the shortest reasonable trial is a week.

Thus have I heard. At one time the Blessed One was staying among the Kurus, at a market town of the Kurus called Kammasadhamma. There he addressed the monks: 'Monks.' 'Venerable sir,' they replied, and the Blessed One said this.

This, monks, is the one-way path for the purification of beings, for the surmounting of sorrow and lamentation, for the ending of pain and grief, for the attaining of the method, for the realising of Nibbana — namely, the four foundations of mindfulness. Which four?

Here, monks, a monk dwells contemplating the body in the body, ardent, clearly comprehending and mindful, having put away covetousness and grief for the world; contemplating feelings in feelings; contemplating mind in mind; contemplating mind-objects in mind-objects — each in the same way.

And how does a monk dwell contemplating the body in the body? Here a monk, gone to the forest, to the root of a tree or to an empty place, sits down cross-legged, holding his body straight and setting mindfulness before him. Mindful he breathes in, mindful he breathes out. Breathing in long he knows 'I breathe in long'; breathing out long he knows 'I breathe out long'; breathing in short he knows 'I breathe in short'; breathing out short he knows 'I breathe out short'. He trains: 'sensitive to the whole body I shall breathe in'; he trains: 'sensitive to the whole body I shall breathe out'. He trains: 'calming the bodily formation I shall breathe in'; he trains: 'calming the bodily formation I shall breathe out'. Just as a skilled turner or his apprentice, making a long turn, knows 'I make a long turn', and making a short turn knows 'I make a short turn' — so too the monk knows his breathing, long and short, and trains in the same way. Thus he dwells contemplating the body in the body internally, or externally, or both.

Just as though there were a sack open at both ends, filled with grain of many kinds — that is to say, hill rice, paddy, mung beans, kidney beans, sesame and husked rice — and a man with eyes to see were to open it and review it: 'These are hill rice, these paddy, these mung beans, these kidney beans, these sesame, these husked rice' — even so a monk reviews this very body, upward from the soles of the feet and downward from the crown of the head, bounded by skin and full of impurity of many kinds, and names the same parts over again. And again, monks, a monk reviews this very body, however it stands and however it is disposed, by way of the elements: 'In this body there is the earth element, the water element, the fire element, the air element.' Just as a skilled butcher or his apprentice, having slaughtered a cow, might sit at a crossroads with it divided into portions — even so a monk reviews this very body, however it stands and however it is disposed, by way of the elements: 'In this body there is the earth element, the water element, the fire element, the air element.' Thus he dwells contemplating the body in the body internally, or externally, or both internally and externally. Or else mindfulness that 'there is a body' is established in him just so far as is needed for knowledge and for remembrance. And he dwells independent, clinging to nothing in the world. Thus too, monks, does a monk dwell contemplating the body in the body.

And again, monks, a monk, as though he were to see a body cast away in a charnel ground — the bones rotted away and gone to powder — compares this very body with it: 'This body too is of such a nature, will come to be like that, and is not exempt from it.' Thus he dwells contemplating the body in the body internally, or externally, or both internally and externally. He dwells contemplating the nature of arising in the body, or the nature of passing away, or the nature of both arising and passing away. And how, monks, does a monk dwell contemplating feelings in feelings? Here, monks, a monk, feeling a pleasant feeling, knows 'I feel a pleasant feeling'; feeling a painful feeling, knows 'I feel a painful feeling'; feeling a feeling neither painful nor pleasant, knows 'I feel a feeling neither painful nor pleasant'. Feeling a pleasant feeling of the flesh, he knows it as such; feeling a pleasant feeling not of the flesh, he knows it as such; and so with the painful, and with the neither-painful-nor-pleasant — each known as of the flesh or not of the flesh. And how, monks, does a monk dwell contemplating mind-objects in mind-objects as regards the five hindrances? Here, monks, a monk, when sensual desire is present in him, knows 'there is sensual desire in me'; when it is absent, knows 'there is no sensual desire in me'; and he knows how unarisen sensual desire comes to arise, how arisen sensual desire is abandoned, and how what has been abandoned does not arise again in future. So too with ill will; so too with sloth and torpor; so too with restlessness and remorse; and so too with doubt — each known as present or absent, and each known in its arising, its abandoning, and its not arising again. Thus he dwells contemplating mind-objects in mind-objects internally, or externally, or both internally and externally. He dwells contemplating the nature of arising in mind-objects, or the nature of passing away, or the nature of both arising and passing away. Or else mindfulness that 'there are mind-objects' is established in him just so far as is needed for knowledge and for remembrance. And he dwells independent, clinging to nothing in the world. Thus too, monks, does a monk dwell contemplating mind-objects in mind-objects, as regards the five aggregates of clinging.

And how does a monk dwell contemplating mind-objects in mind-objects as regards the four noble truths? And what, monks, is the noble truth of suffering? Birth is suffering, ageing is suffering, death is suffering; sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief and despair are suffering; union with what is disliked is suffering, separation from what is liked is suffering, not getting what one wants is suffering. In short, the five aggregates of clinging are suffering.

And what, monks, is the noble truth of the cessation of suffering? It is the remainderless fading away and cessation of that same craving, the giving up of it, the letting go of it, freedom from it, non-reliance upon it. And what, monks, is the noble truth of the way leading to the cessation of suffering? It is this very noble eightfold path. That is to say: right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration.

And what, monks, is right concentration? Here, monks, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unwholesome states, a monk enters and dwells in the first jhāna, which is accompanied by thought and examination, with rapture and pleasure born of seclusion. With the stilling of thought and examination, he enters and dwells in the second jhāna, which has inner confidence and unification of mind, is without thought and without examination, and has rapture and pleasure born of concentration. With the fading away of rapture he dwells equanimous, mindful and clearly comprehending, and experiences pleasure with the body; he enters and dwells in the third jhāna, of which the noble ones declare: equanimous and mindful, he dwells pleasantly. With the abandoning of pleasure and the abandoning of pain, and with the earlier disappearance of gladness and grief, he enters and dwells in the fourth jhāna, which is neither painful nor pleasant and has purity of mindfulness through equanimity. This, monks, is called right concentration.

So he dwells contemplating mind-objects in mind-objects internally, or he dwells contemplating mind-objects in mind-objects externally, or he dwells contemplating mind-objects in mind-objects both internally and externally. He dwells contemplating the nature of arising in mind-objects, or he dwells contemplating the nature of passing away in mind-objects, or he dwells contemplating the nature of both arising and passing away in mind-objects. Or else mindfulness that there are mind-objects is established in him just to the extent necessary for knowledge and remembrance. And he dwells independent, not clinging to anything in the world. That too, monks, is how a monk dwells contemplating mind-objects in mind-objects.

This is the one and only way, monks, for the purification of beings, for the surmounting of sorrow and lamentation, for the disappearance of pain and grief, for the attainment of the true way, for the realisation of Nibbāna — namely, the four foundations of mindfulness. So it was with reference to this that it was said. This is what the Blessed One said. Satisfied, those monks delighted in the Blessed One's words.
