The Discourse on Blessings: a deity asks what the highest blessing is, and is answered with a list running from good company to an unshaken mind.
- When chanted
- Chanted in the paritta service after its prefatory verse; among the best known of all Buddhist texts.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
The book prints its own reference for it, and calls it the first Maṅgala Sutta because it prints the text again later in the book.
The frame is the standard one for a discourse, and it is worth reading rather than skipping: thus have I heard, the setting at Sāvatthī, and then a deity arriving in the far reaches of the night, of surpassing beauty, having lit up the whole of Jeta's Grove.
Meaning and purpose
The question comes in the deity's own verse and repeats exactly the failure the prefatory verse described: many devas and human beings have pondered what blessings are, longing for well-being. Tell us, then, the highest blessing.
The answer is a list, and the order of it is the argument. It starts where anybody can start — not keeping company with fools, keeping company with the wise, honouring those worthy of honour — and then moves through living in a fitting place, much learning and skill, a discipline well trained, speech well spoken, supporting mother and father, caring for wife and children, work free of confusion, giving, blameless action, restraint from strong drink, reverence, humility, contentment and gratitude. Nothing exotic appears until a long way down.
The closing verse is why it is chanted for protection: having done such things as these, undefeated everywhere, they go in safety everywhere. Safety is presented as the consequence of conduct rather than of the chanting — and the text is nonetheless chanted for safety. The tradition holds both of those at once and has never seemed troubled by it.
The chant

Evamme sutaṃ.
Thus have I heard.
เอกัง สะมะยัง ภะคะวา สาวัตถิยัง วิหะระติ เชตะวะเน อะนาถะปิณฑิกัสสะ อาราเม.
Ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṃ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.
At one time the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery.
Athakho aññatarā devatā abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇā kevalakappaṃ jetavanaṃ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ aṭṭhāsi.
Then a certain deity, in the far reaches of the night, of surpassing beauty, having lit up the whole of Jeta's Grove, approached the Blessed One; and having approached and paid homage to him, stood to one side.
เอกะมันตัง ฐิตา โข สา เทวะตา ภะคะวันตัง คาถายะ อัชฌะภาสิ.
Ekamantaṃ ṭhitā kho sā devatā bhagavantaṃ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi.
