A blessing invoking every power in turn, that all illness, fear, danger and ill omen be destroyed and every good thing grow.
- When chanted
- Chanted at the close of a sequence of blessing, and wherever a comprehensive blessing is wanted.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
จักรวาฬ is the world-system, and this is the lesser of a pair — the greater blessing of the same name is longer. It works by accumulation rather than by argument: it names powers until there are no more to name, then names troubles until there are no more of those.
It closes on the same triad as the chant before it, by the power of the Buddhas, the Dhamma and the Sangha in turn, which binds the sequence of blessing into one piece.
Meaning and purpose
The first movement is a list of what is being invoked: all the Buddhas, the whole Dhamma, the whole Sangha, then the three jewels together, then the eighty-four thousand divisions of the Dhamma, the three baskets of the canon, and the Conqueror's disciples. The accumulation is the method. Nothing available is left uninvoked.
Then the two lists the chant exists for. What is to be destroyed: all your illnesses, fears, dangers, misfortunes, ill omens, inauspicious things. What is to grow: long life, wealth, good fortune, renown, strength, beauty, happiness — may it be so always.
Both lists are entirely worldly and the chant is not embarrassed by that. No doctrine is taught here and nothing is asked of the hearer. This is the tradition doing the thing people most often actually come to it for, on an ordinary difficult day, and doing it without pretending to be doing something more refined.
