มงคลจักรวาฬใหญ่ moŋ-kon jàk-grà-waan yài The Greater Universal Blessing Chanted where a full blessing is wanted, and at the close of a major chanting. pages 102–103 14 verses

The longer of the two universal blessings, invoking the marks of a Great Man and the guardian devas of every kind of place.

When chanted
Chanted where a full blessing is wanted, and at the close of a major chanting.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

The companion of the Lesser Universal Blessing printed earlier in the book, and built the same way — by accumulation. The greater difference is in the opening, which is a single enormous compound naming the qualities being invoked.

Its closing colophon does not belong to it alone: below the last verse the book prints จบสิบสองตำนาน, here end the Twelve Tamnan, which closes the whole collection.

Meaning and purpose

The first verse invokes the thirty-two marks of a Great Man, and the Pali runs them together into one word of extraordinary length. Chanted, it arrives as a single unbroken sound rather than as a list, which is part of the effect.

The second names the guardians by where they live: the sky, the mountains, the forests, the earth, the rivers and the great oceans. Nowhere is left without a protector, and the geography is the argument.

The rest is the familiar triad — may every blessing be yours, may all the devas guard you, by the power of all the Buddhas, of the Dhamma, of the Sangha — and then a closing movement about warding off evil planets, yakkhas and spirits by the power of the paritta. It ends the collection where the collection began, with the unseen and what to do about them.

By the power of the thirty-two marks of a Great Man belonging to the Blessed One, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Self-Awakened — whose splendour, steadfastness, intelligence, majesty, victory, accomplishment and great might rest on immeasurable merit and great virtue, and who is able to ward off every danger — by the power of the eighty minor marks, of the hundred and eight auspicious signs, of the six-coloured rays, of the halo; by the power of the ten perfections, the ten higher perfections and the ten ultimate perfections; by the power of virtue, concentration and wisdom; of the Buddha, the Dhamma and the Sangha; of majesty, of psychic power, of strength, of the knowable Dhamma; of the eighty-four thousand divisions of the Dhamma, of the nine supramundane states, of the Eightfold Path, of the eight attainments, of the six higher knowledges, of the knowledge of the Four Truths, of the knowledge of the ten powers, of omniscient knowledge; by the power of loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy and equanimity; of all the parittas; and of going for refuge to the Triple Gem — may all your diseases, sorrows, misfortunes, pains, griefs and despairs perish; may all dangers too perish; may all your intentions succeed; may long life be yours; and may you be endowed always with a life of a hundred years.
