Verses saluting the Buddha, the Dhamma and the Sangha in turn, each salutation closing in a wish for victory and the ending of danger.
- When chanted
- Chanted in the paritta service after the homage verses.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
The title states the chant's premise rather than its subject: the success, or accomplishment, of paying homage. The claim is that the act of salutation itself brings something about.
It falls into three movements, one for each of the Three Jewels, and each is built the same way — a description of what is being saluted, the salutation, and then the wish.
Meaning and purpose
The description of the Buddha is unusually active for a verse of homage. He has vision, the stain of delusion stripped away, awakened of himself, well-gone, released. Then what he did with it: freeing others from the snares of Māra, he brought to safety the people fit to be trained.
ชะนะตัง วิเนยยัง — the people fit to be trained — is a limit, stated without apology or explanation. Not everyone. Those who could be. The verse makes a large claim and bounds it in the same line.
Each movement closes on the same formula: by the power of that, may victory and success be yours, and may all dangers come to nothing. Note the pronoun. The blessing is directed at the hearer, not at the reciter, which is what makes this a chant said for other people rather than for oneself.
