Verses saluting the Buddha, the Dhamma and the Sangha in turn, each closing in a wish for victory and the ending of danger.
- When chanted
- Chanted in the Seven Tamnan after the opening homages.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
The Seven Tamnan is the shorter of the two great paritta collections. Its texts are the same as those of the Twelve Tamnan; what differs is which are included and how far each is cut, and the book's three running orders shorten them further again.
The title states the premise: the success, or accomplishment, of paying homage. The claim is that the act of salutation itself brings something about.
Meaning and purpose
Three movements, one to each of the Three Jewels, each built the same way — a description, the salutation, and then the wish.
The description of the Buddha is unusually active for a verse of homage: he who has vision, with the stain of delusion removed, awakened by himself, well-gone, released. Then what he did with it, which is to free others.
Each movement closes on the same formula, and the pronoun is the point: may victory and success be yours, and may all dangers come to nothing. The blessing is aimed at the hearer rather than the reciter, which is what makes this a chant said for other people.
