Eight lines of homage, each opening with namo, closing in a wish for well-being and strength in the undertaking.
- When chanted
- Chanted in the Seven Tamnan among the opening homages.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
The Seven Tamnan is the shorter of the two great paritta collections. Its texts are the same as those of the Twelve Tamnan; what differs is which are included and how far each is cut, and the book's three running orders shorten them further again.
Every one of the eight lines begins with the word homage, and the chant is named for that. It is the most compressed of the opening verses.
Meaning and purpose
The first three are conventional: homage to the Worthy One, the Great Seer; to the supreme Dhamma, well proclaimed; to the great Sangha, pure in virtue and view.
Then it turns to the utterance itself, saluting the Triple Gem as a form of words rather than only as what the words name — which is the premise a protective chanting rests on, stated openly.
The last line asks something narrower than general safety: by the force of this homage, may I be strong in what I undertake. Not protection but capacity, for the thing being done now.
