The exhortation the Buddha gave to the Māgha assembly, followed by a long exposition of virtue, concentration and wisdom.
- When chanted
- Chanted on Māgha Pūjā after the sung verses, as the longest chant of the day.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
This is the text the whole Māgha observance points at, and the book prints it in two parts: a prefatory verse, and then the passage itself with a good deal of further material attached — which is what the title's 'and what follows' refers to.
The prefatory verse says where the exhortation comes from and how it is held: of the seven Blessed Ones, the Fully Awakened, the Great Seers, it was shown by way of recitation, and three verses of it are recorded. It is presented as something older than the Buddha of this era rather than as his invention.
Meaning and purpose
The exhortation proper is three verses and everything the day is for is in them. Not to do any evil; to take up what is skilful; to purify one's own mind — this is the teaching of the Buddhas. Three clauses, and the tradition has never found a shorter way to say what it is.
Around them sit the harder lines. One gone forth does not strike down another, and one who harms another is no ascetic. Not to speak against, not to injure, restraint under the Pāṭimokkha. Read on the day commemorating an assembly, these are about how people who agree with each other are still capable of doing damage.
What follows is far longer and does the unpacking. Virtue, concentration and wisdom are each expounded twice — once by a lower exposition and once by a higher — so that the same three trainings are given at the level of a lay disciple abstaining from killing, and again at the level of the absorptions. The whole thing closes on diligence: whatever wholesome states there are, all of them are rooted in it, and the last line has the assembly resolve to bring about their welfare with it.
