ปะหานะภาวะนาสุตตัง Pahānabhāvanāsuttaṃ Chanted after its introductory verse, among the short discourses. pages 117–118 4 verses

A four-line discourse: abandon the unwholesome and develop the wholesome, because both can be done.

When chanted
Chanted after its introductory verse, among the short discourses.
Historical background

One of the shortest discourses in the book, and its whole argument turns on a conditional the Buddha puts twice.

The book gives it no English title of its own, so the name used in the app is supplied.

Meaning and purpose

The instruction itself is unremarkable: abandon the unwholesome; develop the wholesome. What follows each is the interesting part.

It can be done. If it could not be done I would not say so; but because it can, I say: abandon it. The teacher explicitly rules out asking for what is impossible, and does so before making the request.

That is a small piece of reasoning with a large consequence. A person who fails at this cannot conclude that the thing was never possible, because the discourse has closed that exit in advance — which is either encouraging or uncomfortable depending on the day.

Thus have I heard. At one time the Blessed One was staying near Savatthi, in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's park. There he addressed the monks: 'Monks.' 'Venerable sir,' they replied, and the Blessed One said this.

Abandon the unwholesome, monks. It can be done. If it could not be done I would not say so; but because it can, I say: abandon the unwholesome. And if abandoning it led to harm and suffering I would not say so; but because abandoning it leads to welfare and happiness, I say: abandon the unwholesome.

Thus spoke the Blessed One, and those monks delighted in his words.
