A protection text alternating prose declarations that the Buddha, dispassion and the Sangha are foremost with verses invoking the truth of each.
- Pali source
- Composite. The verses are those of ระตะนะสุตตัง ทุติยัง, printed at page 82 of this book with the reference ขุ. ขุ. 25/5 ขุ.สุ. 25/367; the prose passages are those of อัคคัปปะสาทะสุตตัง, printed at page 112 with อํ. จตุกฺก. 21/44.
- When chanted
- Chanted when a protection is being made — at a blessing, over a new house, or for someone who is ill.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
ปะริตตะ, paritta, means a protection: a text chanted for safety rather than for instruction. The tradition's own account of how it works is not magical but a matter of truth — a true statement is made, and its truth is then invoked. That is why each verse here ends by naming a truth and asking well-being on the strength of it.
The chant is an assembly rather than a text. Three prose passages, each declaring one thing foremost of its kind, alternate with verses that close on a common refrain. Both halves appear elsewhere in this same book as complete chants in their own right, which is how the source above was established.
Meaning and purpose
The three prose passages are built identically. Of all beings, footless, two-footed, four-footed or many-footed, with form or formless, the Tathāgata is declared foremost. Of all things conditioned or unconditioned, dispassion. Of all communities and assemblies, the Sangha of the Tathāgata's disciples. Each is a superlative, and each is then handed over to a verse.
The verses close on the same two moves: this too is an excellent treasure, and by this truth may there be well-being. Nothing is requested as a favour and nobody is petitioned. The well-being is claimed as a consequence of something being the case.
That structure is the reason the chant is used where it is. What is offered to a frightened household or a sick person is not an incantation but a series of statements the reciters hold to be true, said aloud in their presence — and the last verse makes the tone plain, ending on the wise going out like a lamp rather than on any promise of rescue.

As far as there are beings — footless, two-footed, four-footed or many-footed, with form or formless, percipient or non-percipient or neither-percipient-nor-non-percipient — the Tathagata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Self-Awakened One, is declared the foremost of them. Those who have confidence in the Buddha have confidence in the foremost, and for those with confidence in the foremost the result is foremost.

Whatever wealth there is here or beyond, or whatever excellent treasure is in the heavens, there is none equal to the Tathagata. This too is an excellent treasure in the Buddha. By this truth may there be well-being.

As far as there are things conditioned or unconditioned, dispassion is declared the foremost of them — that is, the crushing of pride, the removal of thirst, the uprooting of clinging, the cutting off of the round, the destruction of craving, dispassion, cessation, nibbana. Those who have confidence in the Dhamma of dispassion have confidence in the foremost, and for those with confidence in the foremost the result is foremost.

Cessation, dispassion, the deathless, the sublime — which the Sakyan sage, composed, attained: there is nothing whatever equal to that Dhamma. This too is a precious jewel in the Dhamma. By this truth may there be well-being.

Of whatever states are conditioned, the noble eightfold path is declared the foremost of them — that is to say: right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration. Those who have confidence in the states of the noble path have confidence in the foremost; and for those who have confidence in the foremost, the result is foremost.

That purity which the best of Buddhas extolled, the concentration they call immediate — no equal to that concentration is found. This too is a precious jewel in the Sangha. By this truth may there be well-being.

Of whatever communities or assemblies there are, the Sangha of the Tathāgata's disciples is declared the foremost of them — that is to say: the four pairs of persons, the eight kinds of individuals. Those who have confidence in the Sangha have confidence in the foremost; and for those who have confidence in the foremost, the result is foremost.

Those eight persons, praised by the good, who are these four pairs — they are the disciples of the Fortunate One, worthy of offerings; what is given to them bears great fruit. This too is a precious jewel in the Sangha. By this truth may there be well-being.

Those who, well applied with a firm mind, are free of desire in Gotama's dispensation — they have reached attainment, plunged into the deathless, and enjoy the peace they have won at no cost. This too is a precious jewel in the Sangha. By this truth may there be well-being.

The old is destroyed, no new becoming arises; their minds are dispassionate towards future existence. With their seeds destroyed and no desire for growth, the wise go out like this lamp. This too is a precious jewel in the Sangha. By this truth may there be well-being.
