ปัตติทานะคาถา Pattidānagāthā Chanted at the end of the morning service; this is the translated printing. pages 210–211 20 verses

The verses for sharing merit in the translated printing, from the devas of the monastery outward to every living thing.

When chanted
Chanted at the end of the morning service; this is the translated printing.
Historical background

From page 193 the book prints its material a second time with a Thai rendering beneath each Pali line. This is one of those second printings. The book gives this printing no English title of its own, so the name used in the app is supplied.

ปัตติทานะ is the giving over of merit. The tradition holds that merit is not spent by being shared, so a service ends by handing on what it has just made.

Meaning and purpose

The first movement addresses the devas of the place — at the shrine, at the Bodhi enclosure, here and there — and what is offered them is the gift of Dhamma. Not goods and not praise: the merit of the service just completed.

It then widens in a deliberate order, and the order is the argument: the monks by seniority, then helpers and donors and lay followers, then villages and lands and their rulers, then all living beings, then the four ways of being born. By the end nothing that lives is outside the sentence.

The closing verses stop sharing and start blessing, asking for ordinary conditions rather than spiritual ones — rain in season, and rulers who protect their people as a mother and father cherish their own child. A service that closed on its own praise would finish facing inward; this one finishes facing the weather and the government.
