The Vinaya in summary: where the first grave offence was laid down and concerning whom, followed by the opening of the Verañjā account.
- When chanted
- Chanted at a funeral, opening the Suat Jaeng service in which the Vinaya, the Suttas and the seven books of the Abhidhamma are recited in turn.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
Suat Jaeng is the funeral chanting in which the three divisions of the canon are each represented, one after another, by a short extract. This is the first of them and stands for the whole of the monastic discipline.
The point of such a service is not to recite the Vinaya, which would take weeks, but to have it present. Each extract is chosen to be recognisably the beginning of the thing it stands for, so that naming the opening serves for the whole.
Meaning and purpose
The extract opens as a catechism, question and answer. Where was the first pārājika laid down? At Vesālī. Concerning whom? Sudinna, son of Kalanda. In what matter? In the matter of his having gone back to his former wife. A pārājika is the gravest class of monastic offence, the kind that ends a monastic life rather than requiring amends for it.
Then, without any transition, the passage turns into narrative: the Buddha at Verañjā with some five hundred monks, the brahmin of that place hearing the report of him, and the long string of epithets that report carried. Both halves are openings — the first rule, and the first scene — which is what qualifies them to stand for a whole division of the canon.
What it does at a funeral is stand in for a body of text far too large to recite, and it does so by naming the very first thing in it. The chant is a gesture towards completeness rather than an argument, and the closing line makes the same point plainly: here ends the Vinaya.

At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Verañjā at the foot of Naḷeru's nimba tree, together with a great Sangha of some five hundred monks.

The brahmin of Verañjā heard: "The ascetic Gotama, sir, the Sakyan son gone forth from the Sakyan clan, is dwelling at Verañjā at the foot of Naḷeru's nimba tree, together with a great Sangha of some five hundred monks."

And this good report had gone abroad about Master Gotama: "So indeed is the Blessed One — worthy, perfectly enlightened by himself, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, well-farer, knower of the worlds, unsurpassed trainer of those to be tamed, teacher of gods and humans, the Awakened One, the Blessed One."

He makes known this world with its gods, its Māras and its Brahmās, this generation with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humans, having realised it himself by direct knowledge.

He teaches the Dhamma that is good in the beginning, good in the middle, good in the end, with its meaning and its wording; he makes known the holy life, complete and pure in its entirety.
