The homage to the Blessed One, chanted three times, opening the Seven Tamnan.
- When chanted
- Chanted three times at the opening of a Seven Tamnan service, after the devas have been assembled.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
The Seven Tamnan is the shorter of the two great paritta collections, and the book prints its opening block separately so that all three of its running orders can refer back to it.
Yet another full printing of this single line. The book sets it out in every collection that uses it rather than cross-referencing, because each is chanted from its own pages.
Meaning and purpose
The line contains no request and no doctrine: homage, and then the Blessed One under three epithets — the fortunate, the worthy, the perfectly enlightened by himself.
Its position here is what gives it its particular character. The devas have already been called, so the homage is the first thing said in their presence rather than the first thing said at all.
Three times, marking that something has been formally begun rather than merely started.
