The running order for the blessing after a meal, and what to substitute for auspicious and inauspicious occasions.
- When chanted
- Followed by the Sangha when chanting the anumodanā; read rather than chanted.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
Plain Thai instruction, no Pali of its own. It explains what the chants around it are for and in what order they are used, naming each by its opening words.
It is one of several such pages in this part of the book, and together they are the closest thing the book has to a manual for running an occasion.
Meaning and purpose
The standard order is given first: the fans raised together in the right hand, the presiding elder beginning yathā vārivahā, then bhavatu taken up by everybody, ending sadā sotthī bhavantu te. The physical action and the words are given as one instruction.
Then the branching, and this is what the page exists for. For an auspicious occasion, chant verses whose meaning bears on it, and then the Lesser Maṅgala Cakkavāḷa in the full or abbreviated form. For an inauspicious one, chant the Tirokuḍḍa Kaṇḍa verses instead.
The blessing is therefore not fixed. Its opening and closing stay the same and something different is set in the middle, chosen to fit what has happened — which is how the same twenty minutes can serve a housewarming and a funeral.
The chant

It is the custom of the monks, when the meal is finished, to chant the anumodanā as a further blessing. The procedure is as follows. When the meal is finished, or when the host has finished presenting the offerings, the anumodanā begins thus:
All the monks raise their fans together, holding them in the right hand. The presiding elder begins yathā vārivahā pūrā paripūrenti sāgaraṃ … down to maṇi jotiraso yathā, drawing the sound out a little. The deputy takes up sabbī, and the rest chant on together — tiyo vivajjantu … āyu vaṇṇo sukhaṃ balaṃ.
ประธานขึ้น ภะวะตุ นอกนั้นรับพร้อมกันต่อไปว่า สัพพะมังคะลัง ฯเปฯ สะทา โสตถี ภะวันตุ เต.
The one presiding begins bhavatu, and the rest take it up together — sabbamaṅgalaṃ … sadā sotthī bhavantu te.
This is the ordinary anumodanā procedure. For the various ceremonies it is usual to chant verses or discourses suited to that ceremony, inserted between yathā … and bhavatu sabbamaṅgalaṃ …. This is called the special anumodanā, as follows:

If it is an auspicious occasion, chant verses or discourses whose meaning bears on such an occasion — for instance the Devatādissadakkhiṇānumodanā verses, the Vihāradāna verses, the Kāladānasutta verses, the Aggappasāda Sutta and the Lesser Maṅgala Cakkavāḷa — after yathā-sabbī-, and then chant bhavatu sabbamaṅgalaṃ … For example, at a merit-making for long life: when yathā- sabbī- is finished, chant the Devatādissadakkhiṇānumodanā verses and the Devatābhisammantana verses straight through, that is yasmiṃ padese kappeti … tasmā hi ne rakkhaṇa appamattā; then chant so atthaladdho if the host is a man, or sā atthaladdhā if the host is a woman, or te atthaladdhā if the hosts

are several. Chant it three times, then chant the Lesser Maṅgala Cakkavāḷa either in the full form or the abbreviated one, beginning sabbabuddhānubhāvena …, and chant bhavatu sabbamaṅgalaṃ straight on without stopping and starting again.

If it is an inauspicious occasion, after chanting yathā- sabbī- chant the Tirokuḍḍa Kaṇḍa verses, beginning either at adāsi me akāsi me … or at ayañca kho dakkhiṇā dinnā …, and ending at tumhehi puññaṃ pasutaṃ anappakanti. After this chant bhavatu sabbamaṅgalaṃ … sadā sotthī bhavantu te. While the presiding elder begins the anumodanā, yathā vārivahā …, the host pours the water of dedication, spreading the merit to forebears and former teachers and to all beings; by the time the elder reaches maṇi jotiraso yathā the water should be exactly finished. Then, with palms together, listen to the monks chanting the anumodanā to its end, and bow three times. That completes the ceremony.
