The Procedure for the Paṃsukūla Followed by the Sangha at a funeral or memorial where the paṃsukūla is drawn. pages 274–275 9 verses

The order of the funeral chanting, listing which passages are recited and what the monks do with their fans and the cloth.

When chanted
Followed by the Sangha at a funeral or memorial where the paṃsukūla is drawn.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

บังสุกุล is the rag-robe: cloth taken from a corpse or a charnel ground, and by extension the cloth laid on a coffin and taken up by the monks. This entry is the procedure for doing it.

It is a running order rather than a text, and it names the chants by their opening words — which is how a monk would find them in this book.

Meaning and purpose

The sequence is set out plainly: the homage three times, then the Dhammasaṅgaṇī mātikā beginning kusalā dhammā, then the Vipassanābhūmi beginning pañcakkhandhā. Each is given by its first words and its last, with an ellipsis between.

The physical actions are given the same weight as the texts. All the monks raise their fans together; the one presiding leads; when the chanting is finished the fans are set down as before; then all take up their fans in the left hand and take hold of the cloth with the right.

What the procedure produces is a room in which a number of people do the same thing at the same moment. That is most of what a funeral asks of those attending it, and the book supplies the choreography as carefully as it supplies the words.

As for the custom of the paṃsukūla, done to dedicate merit to one who has died: if it is done in the full form, the monks must first chant what is called the mātikā. The procedure is as follows.

2

If it is a paṃsukūla occasion in its own right, the host first takes the precepts and then the monks chant the mātikā. If the paṃsukūla follows on from some other ceremony — a seven-day merit-making for the dead, for instance — the host need not take the precepts again, having already taken them before the chanting or the sermon, and the monks begin the mātikā straight away, thus:

3

All the monks raise their fans together, and the one presiding leads the chanting in order, thus:

4

The homage passage, that is, the namo three times.

5

The Dhammasaṅgaṇī mātikā passage, beginning kusalā dhammā, akusalā dhammā, abyākatā dhammā … ending anidassanāppaṭighā dhammā.

6

The Vipassanābhūmi passage, beginning pañcakkhandhā rūpakkhandho … ending dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā ariyasaccaṃ.

7

The Paṭṭhāna mātikā passage, beginning hetupaccayo … ending avigatapaccayo.

8

When the chanting is finished the fans are set down as before. When the monks have finished the Paṭṭhāna mātikā passage, the host first presents the offerings, then prepares and spreads the connecting cloth, or the sacred thread used in its place, laying it in front of the monks from the head of the row to the end. The host then lays the prepared paṃsukūla cloth on the connecting cloth or thread, in front of each monk in turn.

All the monks take up their fans in the left hand and raise them, then together take hold with the right hand of the paṃsukūla cloth the host has laid out. The one presiding begins the paṃsukūla verse, aniccā vata saṅkhārā … tesaṃ vūpasamo sukho — the old custom is three times, the present custom once. When the verse is finished the monks chant the blessing, and the host pours the water of dedication: they chant yathā and sabbī, and when that is done chant the Tirokuḍḍakaṇḍa verses beginning adāsi me akāsi me, or ayañca kho dakkhiṇā dinnā … tumhehi puññaṃ pasutaṃ anappakanti. Then bhavatu sabbamaṅgalaṃ is taken up and chanted to the end, and the paṃsukūla ceremony is complete.
