The middling order, which keeps the same opening and closing and shortens the suttas in the middle.
- When chanted
- Followed when there is not time for the full Seven Tamnan but more than for the short form.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
The middling form exists because a ceremony has to fit an evening. Its opening and closing are the same in every respect as the full form, and the page says so rather than reprinting them.
What is shortened is each individual sutta, and the page is precise about where the cuts fall.
Meaning and purpose
The method of shortening is not to drop texts but to cut inside them. The Ratana Sutta begins at yaṃ kiñci vittaṃ and then skips ahead to khīṇaṃ purāṇaṃ — the opening and the ending, with the middle left out.
Some are not cut at all, and the page marks them: the Karaṇīyametta and the Khandha Paritta are chanted in full. Not everything is thought fit to abbreviate.
One instruction on this page has nothing to do with length. For the Aṅgulimāla Paritta, at a lay occasion begin at yatohaṃ bhagini; at a monastic occasion begin at bojjhaṅgo satisaṅkhāto instead. The verse about a woman in childbirth is not chanted to a room of monks, and a different text is substituted.
