The shortest order, cutting each sutta to a few lines while keeping the same opening and closing.
- When chanted
- Followed where the Seven Tamnan is wanted but time is short.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
The third and briefest of the three orders. As with the middling form, the opening is the same in every respect and the page does not reprint it.
Where the middling form cut the suttas, this one cuts them further, and in some cases starts them at a different place.
Meaning and purpose
The Karaṇīyametta shows the method clearly. In the middling form it is chanted in full from karaṇīyamatthakusalena. Here it begins at mettañca sabbalokasmiṃ — more than halfway through, at the verse about extending loving-kindness to the whole world.
The choice is not arbitrary. What is kept is the part everybody knows and the part that states the practice; what goes is the list of qualifications at the front.
Three orders for one collection, differing only in the middle, is a practical answer to a real difficulty. A ceremony may have twenty minutes or two hours, and the tradition would rather shorten the chanting properly than have somebody improvise a stopping place.
The chant

By the order explained above, it is usual to chant at auspicious occasions where there is evening chanting and a morning or midday meal the next day. Whether the full, the middling or the short form is chanted rests on the occasion or the means of the host. But if it is an occasion where the chanting and the meal fall on the same day,
then the short form is usually chanted, followed by the blessing of the Buddha as time allows. If time is very short, only the opening of the Seven Tamnan is chanted, and the blessing of the Buddha follows straight on, thus:

When the layman has finished requesting the parittas, one monk raises his fan and chants the introduction assembling the devas, pharitvāna mettaṃ sametā … ending dhammassavanakālo ayambhadantā; then he sets the fan down and the one presiding leads the chanting thus:
