Which discourse is chanted at which stage of mourning, from the seventh day to the hundredth, and how each is broken.
- When chanted
- Followed at merit-making for the dead, and at the funeral itself.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
อวมงคล is the inauspicious — the word the tradition uses for funerals and mourning rather than any word for death. The page sets out what is chanted at each stage.
Mourning here is measured in named intervals, and each has its own text: the seventh day, the fiftieth, the hundredth.
Meaning and purpose
The assignments are specific and are not interchangeable. At seven days, the Anattalakkhaṇa Sutta. At fifty days, the Ādittapariyāya. At a hundred days, the Satipaṭṭhāna passage. For the second and third seven-day observances, the Dhammaniyāma.
Two of those choices are worth pausing on. The discourse on not-self is given at the first week, when a family is at its rawest; and the fire sermon at fifty days. Neither is consoling, and neither was chosen to be.
The page then explains how each is broken for chanting — where to pause, where to run straight through. For the Satipaṭṭhāna it is not usual to break in the middle. Somebody has thought about how long a room can sit.

The order of chanting at inauspicious occasions is mostly as follows: merit-making for the dead at seven days, fifty days and a hundred days, and the seven-day observances made every seven days between the seventh and the fiftieth day, and between the fiftieth and the hundredth. Besides these there is merit-making on the anniversary of the death of forebears and former teachers, which is very commonly done. The order of chanting at such occasions has the same opening and closing throughout; only the discourse brought in to suit the occasion differs, or is chosen to match the wish of the host. It will be set out as follows.-

As for the chanting at fifty days, a hundred days, or the second and third seven-day observances and so on, the opening and closing of the discourse follow the same order in every respect; only the discourse chanted is changed, according to what has been laid down.
For the Ādittapariyāya Sutta it is usual to break in the middle thus: when the introduction is finished, begin evaṃ me sutaṃ, ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā … down to mano āditto dhammā ādittā … sokehi paridevehi dukkhehi domanassehi upāyāsehi ādittanti vadāmi; then begin evaṃ passaṃ bhikkhave sutvā ariyasāvako … ending tassa bhikkhusahassassa anupādāya āsavehi cittāni vimucciṃsūti.
For the Satipaṭṭhāna passage it is not usual to break in the middle; it is chanted straight through. When the introduction is finished, begin atthi kho tena bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā sammāsambuddhena … ending etena maggena tariṃsu pubbe tarissare ceva taranti coghanti.
For the Dhammaniyāma Sutta, when the introduction is finished begin evaṃ me sutaṃ … down to bhagavā etadavoca; then continue uppādā vā bhikkhave tathāgatānaṃ … ending attamanā te bhikkhū bhagavato bhāsitaṃ abhinandunti.
