Historical background
นพเคราะห์ is the nine planets of Indian astrology, and this is the one order of service in the book arranged around them rather than around an event.
Nine monks are wanted, one to a planet, and the parittas are assigned to the planets in sequence. It is the clearest instance in this book of Buddhist chanting fitted to a frame that is not Buddhist in origin.
Meaning and purpose
The page is candid about who calls for it. When the astrologer or the learned layman has requested the parittas, the presiding elder leads the opening. The occasion is diagnosed by somebody outside the Sangha, and the Sangha then supplies the remedy.
What is chanted is entirely orthodox — the homage, the refuge, the Namakārasiddhi and Namokāra-aṭṭhaka verses, then the parittas. Nothing has been invented for the occasion; the material is the ordinary collection, re-ordered.
It closes as the other protective services do, with bhavatu sabbamaṅgalaṃ and then the verse about the stars, the yakkhas and the spirits. The astrology decides the arrangement; the tradition decides the words.

For the Navagraha chanting it is usual to have nine monks chant, and usual for the parittas to be chanted in the order of the nine planets. The procedure is as follows.

When the astrologer or the learned layman has requested the parittas, the presiding elder leads the opening passages of the Navagraha as follows:

The homage passage, that is, the namo three times.
สะระณะคะมะนะปาฐะ คือ พุทธัง สะระณัง คัจฉามิ ฯเปฯ ตะติยัมปิ สังฆัง สะระณัง คัจฉามิ.

เมื่อสวดมาถึง มังคะละสุตตัง แล้วหยุดให้โหรสวดบูชาพระอาทิตย์ก่อน จบแล้วพระภิกษุรูปหนึ่งตั้งพัดสวด บทขัดโมระปะริตตัง ขึ้น ปูเรนตัมโพธิสัมภาเร ฯเปฯ ปะริตตันตัมภะณามะ เห. สวด โมระปะริตตัง ขึ้น อุเทตะยัญจักขุมา เอกะราชา ฯเปฯ โมโร วาสะมะกัปปะยีติ.
When the chanting reaches the Maṅgala Sutta, stop and let the astrologer chant the offering to the Sun first. When that is done, one monk raises his fan and chants the introduction to the Mora Paritta … then the Mora Paritta itself.
