The running order for the chanting before a meal, naming each chant by its first and last words.
- When chanted
- Followed by the Sangha before the meal at a ceremony; read rather than chanted.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
The companion of the anumodanā procedure: that one covers what is chanted after the meal, this covers what is chanted before it.
Each chant is identified by its opening words and its closing words, with an ellipsis between — which is how somebody holding this book finds the right page without a table of contents.
Meaning and purpose
The order is fixed and short: the homage three times; then the virtues of the Buddha, the Dhamma and the Sangha, beginning itipi so bhagavā; then the Jayamaṅgala verses beginning bāhuṃ; then the Jayaparitta beginning mahākāruṇiko nātho.
The instruction also covers what the layperson does. When the time has come, the host lights the candles and incense — the chanting does not begin until the room has been prepared, and the page says whose job that is.
Read beside the chants themselves, this page is what turns a collection of texts into an occasion. The book has spent hundreds of pages printing what to say; here it says when, in what order, and who moves first.
The chant
As the book prints it: page 270 and page 271 →
According to the custom at ceremonies where there is evening chanting and a morning or midday meal: the procedure for the evening chanting has already been explained, for both auspicious and inauspicious occasions. As for the time before the morning or midday meal on the following day, the procedure to be followed is this:
Before the meal it is the custom to chant the blessing of the Buddha first. That is: when the time has come, the host of the occasion lights incense and candles in homage to the Triple Gem and takes the precepts; after that the monks begin the blessing of the Buddha. There is no need to request the parittas. Thus:
