The Discourse on the Jewels in the Seven Tamnan printing, each verse closing on a truth and a wish for well-being.
- When chanted
- Chanted in the Seven Tamnan; among the most used of all protective texts.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
The Seven Tamnan is the shorter of the two great paritta collections. Its texts are the same as those of the Twelve Tamnan; what differs is which are included and how far each is cut, and the book's three running orders shorten them further again.
The clearest example in the book of how a paritta is thought to work. Each verse states something held to be true, then asks for well-being on the strength of it having been said.
Meaning and purpose
The opening is an address rather than a claim: whatever beings are gathered here, whether of the earth or of the sky. The same move that opened the service is made again inside the text.
Then the long middle, where each verse builds to the same close. Something is asserted about the Buddha, or the Dhamma, or the Sangha; it is named a jewel; and then, by this truth, may there be well-being. The pattern repeats until it becomes the sound of the thing rather than an argument in it.
It ends where it began, with the beings it summoned, having spent its length giving them something true to hear.
