ระตะนะสุตตัง ทุติยัง Ratanasuttaṃ dutiyaṃ The Ratana Sutta, the Second Chanted in the paritta service after its prefatory verse; among the most used of all protective texts. pages 82–86 89 verses

The Discourse on the Jewels: seventeen verses each closing on the truth of the Buddha, the Dhamma or the Sangha, and a wish for well-being.

When chanted
Chanted in the paritta service after its prefatory verse; among the most used of all protective texts.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

The book prints its own reference, and calls this the second Ratana Sutta because the text appears again later. The prefatory verse before it has already said what the sutta is held to have done: dispelled a threefold fear of disease, non-human beings and famine.

Its construction is the plainest example in the book of how a paritta is thought to work. Each verse states something held to be true, and then asks for well-being on the strength of it having been said.

Meaning and purpose

The opening is an address rather than a claim, and it is the same move that opens the whole service: whatever beings are gathered here, whether of the earth or of the sky, may all of them be glad of mind and listen carefully to what is spoken. Nothing is asked of them but attention.

Then the long middle, where each verse builds to the same kind of close. Something is asserted about the Buddha, or the Dhamma, or the Sangha; the verse names it a jewel; and then, by this truth, may there be well-being. The pattern repeats until it becomes the sound of the thing rather than an argument in it.

The last verses turn from asserting to saluting, and the beings called at the start are addressed once more. The Tathagata, honoured by devas and humans, we salute: may there be well-being. It ends where it began, with the audience it summoned, having spent eighty-nine lines giving them something true to hear.
