Verses arguing that the Buddha, the Dhamma and the Sangha are three in name and one in meaning, closing in a threefold entreaty.

When chanted
Chanted after the paritta service, among the verses of entreaty that close a formal chanting.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

This is one of the few chants in the book that argues rather than declares. Its first six verses are a piece of reasoning about why the Three Jewels are three at all.

Like the verses on the accomplishing power of the Triple Gem earlier in the book, it turns in its later verses to Siam and its rulers, so it belongs to the same modern layer of composition.

Meaning and purpose

The argument is set out in two moves. First the concession: Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha, though they are separate as things, are inseparable one from another, and in meaning they are one. Then the demonstration, which is circular on purpose — the Buddha is the one who awakens to the Dhamma; the Dhamma is upheld by the Sangha; and the Sangha is the Buddha's disciple.

Each of the three is defined by its relation to the other two, so none of them can be removed and leave the other two standing. That is what อิจเอกาพัทธะเมวิทัง, bound together as one, is asserting.

The close turns from argument to entreaty and repeats itself three times: may it be accomplished, may it be accomplished, may it be accomplished. What is asked for is granted to a particular kind of person — one whose heart is settled in faith in this Triple Gem — which is the argument's conclusion put as a condition.
