ระตะนัตตะยัปปะภาวะสิทธิคาถา Ratanattayappabhāvasiddhigāthā Verses on the accomplishing power of the Triple Gem Chanted on state and national occasions, and wherever a blessing on the country is wanted. pages 49–50 30 verses

Verses on the power of the Triple Gem which turn, halfway through, into a prayer for the Thai nation, its sovereign and the standing of the dispensation.

When chanted
Chanted on state and national occasions, and wherever a blessing on the country is wanted.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

The chant opens as many others do, with the three jewels described in turn. Then it does something no other chant in this book does: it names a country. ทัยยะเทโส, the Thai land; ทัยยะชาติ, the Thai nation; and ธัมมะขัตติโย, its righteous sovereign.

It is therefore a composition of a particular time and place. The Pali is the tradition's language but the subject is a modern kingdom, and the verses were written for a state that had taken the Triple Gem as the banner of its realm and the sanction of its law.

Meaning and purpose

The first third is conventional and carefully made: the Buddha as compassionate awakener of those ready to be trained; the Dhamma as the render of the world's darkness, leading out from suffering; the Sangha as a mine of merit, purified in virtue and in view. Together they are the highest refuge, and — a nice touch — fit for the ranging of the knowledge of wise examiners. The claim is that it will bear inspection.

Then the turn. The Thai land, having come to this, stands established in the happiness of peace; it has honoured and guarded the Triple Gem, made it the banner of the realm and the Dhamma's sanction for its law, and made the Sangha sovereign in the affairs of the dispensation. Every clause joins the religion to the state and says the arrangement works.

The last third is prayer rather than description: may the Thai nation shine and reach abundance and growth; long may the dispensation stand in the world; long may the sovereign live, free from illness and from fear; and for those who guard the realm, may every success be lasting. It is worth reading carefully, because it shows something a preface would only assert — the relation this tradition has actually had with the state in this country, set out in the tradition's own liturgical language.
