ระตะนัตตะยัปปะณามะคาถา Ratanattayappaṇāmagāthā Verses of Homage to the Triple Gem Chanted in the morning service after the three praises; this is the printing that carries a Thai translation. pages 198–199 13 verses

The verses of homage to the Triple Gem in the translated printing, four stanzas each ending in an act of reverence.

When chanted
Chanted in the morning service after the three praises; this is the printing that carries a Thai translation.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

From page 193 the book prints its material a second time, now with a Thai rendering set beneath each Pali line. This is one of those second printings, and the Pali is unchanged from the first.

These are the first verses in metre a reader of the translated half meets, and the Thai has a harder job here than with the prose praises — the imagery is ornamented and does not translate flatly.

Meaning and purpose

Each of the three salutations is built the same way: three lines of description, then the same closing line with one word changed — I revere that Buddha, that Dhamma, that Sangha, with devotion.

The images are chosen to say what each one does. The Buddha as a great ocean of compassion whose eye of knowledge is purified; the Dhamma as a lamp, which is not the destination but what makes the way visible; the Sangha as a field surpassing all fields.

The last stanza changes register and is the reason the chant sits where it does. Having made the salutations, it asks that the merit of having made them clear away obstacles — so the reverence just offered is turned into something with a use before the service goes on.
