The verses sharing merit with all beings without exception, including those who will never know of it.

When chanted
Chanted at the close of a service where merit is dedicated; this is the translated printing.
Historical background

From page 193 the book prints its material a second time with a Thai rendering beneath each Pali line. This is one of those second printings. The book gives this printing no English title of its own, so the name used in the app is supplied.

สัพพะปัตติทานะ is the giving of merit to all. Where the verses before it begin with the devas of one monastery, these begin with beings without end and without measure.

Meaning and purpose

The list is built to exclude nobody, and it says so twice over. Those dear and full of virtue, such as mother and father, seen or unseen; and others, neutral or hostile. The hostile are named and not qualified.

Then the cosmology, which is there to close the last gaps: beings in the three planes, in the four kinds of birth, with five aggregates, with one, or with four. Every category the tradition recognises is listed so that none can be argued out.

The last verse handles the obvious objection. Those who know of the merit shared may rejoice in it themselves; and for those who do not know, may the devas carry word to them. The dedication does not depend on the recipient hearing about it — and where hearing matters, arrangements are made.
