Homage to an immense number of Buddhas, counted in thousands and hundreds of thousands, with a request that all dangers be destroyed.
- When chanted
- Chanted in the paritta service among the opening verses, before the suttas themselves.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
This chant works by number rather than by name. Twenty-eight, then twelve thousand, then five hundred thousand — and the figures change again as the verses go on.
Its refrain returns three times, once after each group: by the power of this homage, having destroyed all misfortunes, may the many dangers too be destroyed without remainder.
Meaning and purpose
What is being invoked is quantity, and the chant is not shy about saying so. The twenty-eight are the Buddhas the tradition names and can list. The larger figures are not a list anybody could recite; they are an assertion that the number is past listing.
Each group is followed by the same two moves. Their Dhamma and their Saṅgha too I revere and bow to — so each Buddha brings a teaching and a community with him. Then the request. Homage, then consequence, three times over.
That structure is why it stands where it does. A protective chanting rests on the power of what is honoured, so before anything is asked for, this chant establishes the sheer size of what is being appealed to.
