The passage on spiritual urgency in the translated printing, at fifty-three units the longest chant of the morning service.
- When chanted
- Chanted in the morning service after the verses of homage; this is the printing that carries a Thai translation.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
From page 193 the book prints its material a second time, now with a Thai rendering set beneath each Pali line. This is one of those second printings, and the Pali is unchanged from the first.
สังเวคะ names the jolt of recognising that the situation is serious and time is limited — not despair, which stops a person, but the thing that starts one. The title says what the passage is for rather than what it is about.
Meaning and purpose
It moves in three stages. First the situation: a Tathāgata has arisen and a Dhamma has been taught that leads out. Then what has been learned from it — birth, ageing and death are suffering, and in short the five aggregates of clinging are suffering.
The second stage takes those same five and says them twice more, first as impermanent and then as not-self. The repetition is slow and deliberate; the passage is not arguing but going through a list in a way that gives recognition time to land. With the Thai beneath, that slowness is doubled.
The third brings it to the people chanting — all of us are beset by birth, ageing and death — and then turns on one line: perhaps an end to this whole mass of suffering might be found. Everything after it is consequence, and the closing asks that the life undertaken lead where it was undertaken to lead.
