The hymn in praise of the Sangha in the translated printing, completing the three hymns of the evening service.
- When chanted
- Chanted in the evening service after the recollection of the Sangha's qualities; this is the translated printing.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
From page 193 the book prints its material a second time, now with a Thai rendering set beneath each Pali line. This is one of those second printings, and the Pali is unchanged from the first.
The third of the three evening hymns. From its fifth verse it repeats the same template as the hymns to the Buddha and the Dhamma, changing only its object, so a reader meets the same lines a third time.
Meaning and purpose
The opening stanza is its own: the Sangha born of the true Dhamma, of eight kinds, whose body and mind are the dwelling place of virtue — and then the salutation to that wholly pure company.
Then the shared template, and its force is different when the object is a community. I am the Sangha's servant; the Sangha is my lord and master; to the Sangha I surrender this body and this life; there is no other refuge. With the Thai beneath, none of that can be passed over as formula.
It closes as the other two do, with the prostration, the lowered voice, and the request for pardon. Read across all three hymns the effect is cumulative: the same complete devotion offered three times, in identical words, to three different objects, with nothing ranked above anything else.
