สังฆาภิถุติ Saṅghābhithuti Praise of the Sangha Chanted in the morning service after the recollection; this is the printing that carries a Thai translation. pages 197–198 14 verses

Praise of the Sangha in the translated printing: four ways of practising, the four pairs, and the honours owed.

When chanted
Chanted in the morning service after the recollection; this is the printing that carries a Thai translation.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

From page 193 the book prints its material a second time, now with a Thai rendering set beneath each Pali line. This is one of those second printings, and the Pali is unchanged from the first.

The longest of the three praises, and the one that needs its translation most, because the phrase that defines the word Sangha is not obvious from the Pali alone.

Meaning and purpose

Four ways of practising open it, each with the whole phrase repeated rather than shortened: having practised well, straightforwardly, methodically, masterfully.

Then the definition that keeps the word from meaning whatever monks happen to be present: the four pairs, the eight kinds of noble ones. The Thai renders this in terms a lay reader can follow, which matters here more than anywhere else in the three praises.

And then the honours — worthy of gifts, of hospitality, of offerings, of respect — closing on the unexcelled field of merit for the world. Read with the Thai beneath, the sequence is plainly an argument: this is who they are, and this is what follows from it.
