A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
From page 193 the book prints its material a second time with a Thai rendering beneath each Pali line. This is one of those second printings, and the Pali is unchanged from the first.
อนุสสติ is recollection — a calling to mind rather than a praise. The evening service is built as three of these, each answered by a longer hymn, and this is the third.
Meaning and purpose
The four ways of practising open it and the whole phrase is repeated each time rather than shortened: has practised well, straightly, for knowing the Dhamma which is the means of release from suffering, and properly.
The third of the four is the one the Thai has to work hardest on, and the rendering here spells out what ญายะปะฏิปันโน means — practising by the right method, for the sake of knowing. A bare English word like methodically loses that.
Then the definition and the honours, ending on the unexcelled field of merit for the world. The Buddha and the Dhamma can be recollected by naming qualities; the Sangha has to be said what it is first, because the word is used loosely everywhere else.
