Sung verses for Aṭṭhamī Pūjā, on the pyre of the Mallas and the burning of the Buddha's final body.

When chanted
Chanted on Aṭṭhamī Pūjā after the offering, in the saraphañña manner.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

The second of the three sung sets, and the most narrative of them. Where the Visākha verses state a coincidence of dates and move on, these tell what happened on one afternoon.

They are also the plainest evidence of what Aṭṭhamī marks, which its name alone does not say. The opening line counts the days: today, from the Visākha full moon, is the eighth.

Meaning and purpose

The account is given in concrete detail and without consolation. A pyre of all fragrant woods was made by the faithful Mallas. Showing a marvel, it took flame of itself. And what was burnt is named exactly: that which was his final body, bearing the thirty-two excellent marks.

The phrase ธาตุภูเตนะ เตเชสา — by that elemental fire — puts the event in the same terms the reflections on the requisites use. The body of the Great Seer is burnt by the fire element, and both the body and the fire are named as elements. Nothing is exempted from the analysis, least of all here.

That is what these verses are for, and why a day given to a cremation is kept at all. The tradition sings, on this occasion, about the one thing it might have been tempted to make an exception of — and it does not make one.
