Sung verses for Māgha Pūjā, on the Buddha at Rājagaha delivering the Pāṭimokkha to the assembly that came unsummoned.
- When chanted
- Chanted on Māgha Pūjā after the offering, in the saraphañña manner.
A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.
Historical background
The third and shortest of the sung sets. Like the others it opens by naming the day by its moon — the full-moon day joined with the Māgha asterism — and then places the Buddha in a particular monastery on it.
It is the only one of the three whose closing petition asks for something beyond the reciters' own welfare.
Meaning and purpose
The scene is built in stages, each verse adding one thing: the day, then who he was, then what he was like, then where he was — dwelling at Rājagaha, in the hill-girt stronghold of the Magadhans, in the monastery of the Bamboo Grove, at the squirrels' feeding place. Four descriptions of one address.
The act the verses build to is not a miracle or a discourse but an administrative one: delivering the Pāṭimokkha at the pure and patient Uposatha. What is being celebrated is a community meeting, held properly.
And the closing petition follows from that. May there always be well-being for us, and may the dispensation of our Teacher long endure. Having spent the whole set on an assembly rather than on a person, the verses end by asking for the survival of what such assemblies exist to keep going.
