สะระภัญญะคาถา สำหรับสวดในวันวิสาขบูชา sà-rá-pan-yá-kaa-tǎa sǎm-ràp sùat nai wan wí-sǎa-kà-buu-chaa The Saraphañña Verses for Chanting on Visākha Pūjā Day Chanted on Visākha Pūjā after the offering, in the saraphañña manner rather than the ordinary reciting tone. pages 67–68 30 verses

Verses in the saraphañña style for Visākha Pūjā, on the one who was born, awakened and quenched on the same full moon.

When chanted
Chanted on Visākha Pūjā after the offering, in the saraphañña manner rather than the ordinary reciting tone.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

สะระภัญญะ names a way of chanting rather than a subject. It is sung, in a melody with real intervals, and is used for verse rather than for prose. Each of the three festivals with its own set is given one.

Because the manner is fixed, the sets are recognisably a series: the same length, the same metre, and the same closing petition, with only the day's own events changed.

Meaning and purpose

The first verse states the coincidence the day rests on in a single line: he who on the Visākha full moon was born into his final birth, who reached full awakening, and who likewise passed to final nibbāna. Three events, one date, no comment offered on the fact.

The middle verses turn to what he was rather than what happened to him — the unsurpassed teacher, whose dwelling is the ocean of compassion and knowledge, the guide upon the path of release — and then to what the reciters have done about it: to that Buddha of great compassion we have gone for refuge.

The close is the same petition the offering made, now in verse: that the offerings, thus and thus well prepared, be accepted for our welfare and our happiness for a long time to come, for the avoiding of loss and the increase of gain. Sung rather than said, it is the part of the day most people remember.
