สะติปัฏฐานะปาโฐ Satipaṭṭhānapāṭho Chanted after its introductory verse, and at merit-making a hundred days after a death. pages 127–128 8 verses

The four foundations of mindfulness in brief: body, feelings, mind and mental objects, contemplated internally and externally.

When chanted
Chanted after its introductory verse, and at merit-making a hundred days after a death.
Historical background

The book gives this printing no English title of its own, so the name used in the app is supplied.

The short form. The book prints the full Mahāsatipaṭṭhāna a page later at two hundred and nine units; this gives the same structure in eight.

Meaning and purpose

The frame is stated first and is the same for all four: dwelling contemplating the body in the body, ardent, clearly comprehending and mindful, having put away covetousness and grief for the world.

Then each of the four is asked after in turn, and each answer adds the same three dimensions — internally, or externally, or both. The practice is applied to oneself and to others by the same method.

It closes by repeating the claim it opened with: this is the one-way path. And then a line that puts it in company — by this path they crossed over before, they cross now, and they will cross. The practice is offered as the one everybody who has ever finished used.

There is, declared by the Blessed One who knows and sees, the Arahant, the Perfectly Awakened One, this one-way path, rightly proclaimed: for the purification of beings, for the surmounting of sorrow and lamentation, for the ending of pain and grief, for the attaining of the method, for the realising of Nibbana — namely, the four foundations of mindfulness. Which four?

Here a monk dwells contemplating the body in the body, ardent, clearly comprehending and mindful, having put away covetousness and grief for the world; contemplating feelings in feelings; contemplating mind in mind; contemplating mind-objects in mind-objects — each in the same way.

And how does a monk dwell contemplating the body in the body? Here a monk dwells contemplating the body in the body internally, or externally, or both; contemplating its arising, or its passing away, or both. Or his mindfulness that 'there is a body' is established just far enough for knowing and remembering. And he dwells independent, clinging to nothing in the world. That is how a monk dwells contemplating the body in the body.
