Historical background
The second and largest of the four groups. The book prints no title for it, only the heading โภชะนะปะฏิสังยุต 30 สิกขาบท with its count; the English title used here is the app's own.
Its size is not an accident. The almsround and the meal are where the monastic and lay worlds actually touch, every single morning and in somebody's house rather than in a monastery. More rules attach to that hour than to any other part of the day.
Meaning and purpose
The group opens with attention rather than restriction. Almsfood is to be received สักกัจจัง, attentively; with attention on the bowl; with a due proportion of curry. Nothing is said about how much food or how good it is. What is governed is the manner of receiving it.
The later rules become specific to the point of seeming trivial — not taking a water vessel with a hand soiled by food, not throwing out bowl-rinsing water with rice grains in it among the houses. Read as a legal code that is odd. Read as a description of somebody eating carefully in another person's home, it is ordinary good manners written down and committed to memory.
The meal is the one moment of the day when a monk is wholly dependent and wholly visible, receiving from people who may have little. These rules take that exposure and make it something practised in advance rather than handled on the spot.
