The Sekhiya Rules — Dhammadesanāpaṭisaṃyutta Recited by monastics after the morning service, with the other three groups of the training observances. pages 17–18 16 verses

Sixteen training rules on teaching the Dhamma, each declining to teach someone whose posture or conduct shows they are not there to listen.

When chanted
Recited by monastics after the morning service, with the other three groups of the training observances.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

The third of the four groups. As with the second, the book prints no title, only the heading with its count, and the English title is the app's own.

One feature runs through every rule and is easy to read past: อะคิลานัสสะ, someone who is not ill. The exception is restated in all sixteen rather than declared once at the head, so that no rule can be quoted without it. Illness suspends the whole group.

Meaning and purpose

Each rule names a listener and declines. Someone holding a sunshade, a staff or a knife. Someone walking in front while the teacher walks behind, or on the path while the teacher is off it. The refusal is never about the person's worth — it is about the arrangement they are standing in.

What the group protects is the teaching rather than the teacher. Somebody armed, or striding ahead, or being addressed from below is not placed to receive anything; teaching them in that moment spends the Dhamma on an occasion that cannot hold it. The rules describe the conditions under which speech is worth making.

Taken together they amount to a rule against speaking merely because one has something to say. And the exception says what the whole group is for: where there is real need, every one of these arrangements stops mattering at once.
