The three miscellaneous training rules, on not relieving oneself standing, or on living greenery, or in water.

When chanted
Recited by monastics after the morning service, closing the four groups of the training observances.

A note on this chant. The book prints this chant in Pali only, with no Thai translation. The English here is a working translation prepared for this edition — it is not the book's own, and has not yet been checked by a teacher.

Historical background

ปกิณณะกะ means miscellaneous — what is left once the other categories are full. Three rules, and with them the training observances come to an end.

With the groups before it, the book's own counts run twenty-six, thirty, sixteen and three. Each of these last three carries the same exception for illness that runs through the group before it.

Meaning and purpose

All three concern the disposal of what the body produces, and two of them are plainly about other people rather than about the monk: greenery that somebody tends, water that somebody drinks from or washes in. The third, not standing, is about how it looks.

It is a fitting close to the section. Having worked through robes, walking, sitting, receiving food, eating and teaching, the rule finishes on the least dignified part of ordinary life and treats it exactly as it treated everything else — as something that can be done carelessly or with attention, and that other people live downstream of.
